Why You Will Love These Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients Needed for These Whipped Potatoes
Ingredient quantities for this easy mashed potatoes recipe are located in the recipe card at the end of the post.
- Yukon Gold potatoes (or yellow or gold potatoes; see note below)
- Cream cheese
- Butter
- Heavy whipping cream
- Salt
- Pepper
- Garlic powder (optional)
- Milk (optional; to thin)
- Fresh parsley (optional; for garnish)
Yukon Gold potatoes are my #1 favorite for mashed potatoes because of their buttery flavor and creamy texture. If you can’t find them, you can use any yellow or gold variety.
How To Make Mashed Potatoes
The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the recipe. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.
Add peeled and cubed potatoes to a large pot. Cover with water and 2 tbsp salt, then bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer for 15-20 minutes or until fork tender.
While the potatoes are cooking, in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, combine cream cheese, butter, heavy cream, remaining salt, and pepper (add garlic powder if desired). Whisk occasionally until melted and combined, then turn off the heat.
It’s okay if the cream cheese doesn’t melt fully in the saucepan – leaving some small bits of cream cheese is 100% okay. It will all get mashed into the potatoes soon!

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them and add the warmed mixture.

Mash with a potato masher, food mill, or ricer. (Here’s the potato masher I use.)

These mashed potatoes are quite dense because of the type of potato used. In contrast, Russet potatoes produce fluffier mashed potatoes, but they lack the deliciously buttery flavor of Yukon Golds. If you want to thin out the final result, add a small amount at a time of warm milk until the potatoes reach your desired consistency.

Optionally garnish with fresh parsley. (You can also add pats of butter if you’d like.) Serve and enjoy!

🥔 To store: Refrigerate within two hours of cooking. Refrigerated mashed potatoes will last 3-4 days in the fridge.
