Ingredients Needed for Sweet Potato Casserole with Marshmallows
Ingredient quantities for this easy sweet potato casserole recipe are located in the recipe card at the end of the post.
- Sweet potatoes – these make the recipe totally healthy, right?! 😉
- Brown sugar – this recipe uses brown sugar instead of white sugar because brown sugar perfectly enhances the flavor of cooked sweet potatoes 🧡
- Heavy whipping cream – this makes the dish extra-rich and creamy!
- Vanilla extract
- Cinnamon
- Butter
- All-purpose flour
- Pecans – chopped pecans typically come untoasted, which is great for this recipe since they will be toasted during the cooking process
- Mini marshmallows – these are optional but highly recommended! They add a fun look to the top of the casserole, and you can’t go wrong with gooey marshmallows mixed into your serving of sweet potatoes 🍠
How To Make Sweet Potato Casserole
The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the recipe. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.
First, you’ll cook your chopped and peeled sweet potatoes so they’re nice and soft.

Add cooked sweet potatoes, butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon to a bowl. Mix well, then mash with a fork or a potato masher.

Add heavy whipping cream. At this point, you can stir in the heavy whipping cream and leave the potatoes textured, or you can use an electric mixer on low to smooth them out.

Add sweet potato mixture to your casserole dish.

In a bowl, combine all topping ingredients except for mini marshmallows.
Not a fan of pecans? You can substitute them with rolled old-fashioned oats (not quick oats), Rice Krispies, or even crushed pretzels for a unique flavor twist. However, you’ll need to watch the casserole carefully during the baking process to make sure the topping doesn’t burn.

Evenly spoon the topping ingredients over the sweet potato mixture and bake.

Optionally top with mini marshmallows and return to the oven for a few minutes until the marshmallows begin to brown.
You can use regular-sized marshmallows (whole or cut into smaller pieces) if you don’t have mini marshmallows on hand.

Enjoy! This dish tastes incredible.
