Ingredients Needed for 3 Ingredient Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins

Ingredient quantities for this easy chocolate chip pumpkin muffins recipe are located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

  1. Spice cake mix – I highly recommend the Duncan Hines mix for superior flavor! (I buy it on Amazon because I find it’s typically cheaper than my local grocery stores)
  2. Pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix)
  3. Chocolate chips

How To Make Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins with 3 Ingredients (Quick Overview)

The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the muffins. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

Preheat the oven, prep the muffin pan, and gather your ingredients. You don’t need to add anything to the cake mix – you’ll be using the dry mix in this recipe.

You can use semi-sweet, milk, dark, or white chocolate chips in this recipe.

Trust the process and resist the urge to modify the recipe. I promise your muffins will turn out great!

Add the pumpkin puree and dry cake mix to a bowl and mix on low until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. Make sure not to overmix.

Add the chocolate chips…

… and gently fold them in.

Add them to your prepared muffin pan. If you like, you can sprinkle some additional chocolate chips on top of the muffins.

The batter is pretty sticky. I usually scoop it into each liner using a cookie scoop and then flatten the top of each muffin with the back of a spoon that’s been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.

Bake, then cool on a wire rack. Look at these beautiful muffins 😍

Two Important Tips

  • Feel free to use any flavor of cake mix. If you go with a non-spiced mix like French vanilla and want it to be spiced, I suggest adding 1 tsp of pumpkin pie spice and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon. You can even use chocolate cake mix for double chocolate muffins!
  • I highly recommend Duncan Hines for the best flavor and the right cake mix size. With “shrinkflation,” Betty Crocker mixes are now 13.25 oz instead of 15.25 oz. If you opt for a Betty Crocker mix, use 13 oz of pumpkin puree instead of 15 oz, and prepare only 10 muffins instead of 12.

  • 1 cup chocolate chips plus more if desired

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 F.

You can use any flavor of cake mix. If you use a non-spiced cake mix (like French vanilla) and want to add a spiced flavor, I recommend 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. You can also use chocolate cake mix and skip the spices.
Any type of chocolate chips (including white chocolate) will work for these muffins.
