Ingredient quantities for this easy homemade chocolate dessert are located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

  1. Cream cheese
  2. Butter
  3. Powdered sugar
  4. vanilla extract
  5. Dutch process cocoa powder (highly recommended for the richest chocolate flavor, but you can use regular cocoa powder in a pinch)
  6. Milk chocolate chips
  7. Refined coconut oil (I recommend using refined instead of unrefined because it doesn’t have a coconut flavor)

How To Make Chocolate Heaven Dessert (Quick Overview)

The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the dessert recipe. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

🍫 Photo 1: Mix cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar in a large bowl until fluffy.

Add cocoa powder and more powdered sugar if desired, then mix well.

Tip: Dutch process cocoa powder is strongly recommended for this recipe because it is less bitter than regular cocoa powder and will result in a richer, more chocolate-y dessert. However, if you only have regular cocoa powder on hand, check out the recipe card notes (at the end of the post) for substitution instructions.

🍫 Photo 2: Spread the chocolate base mixture in an 8″ x 8″ pan lined with parchment paper. Freeze for an hour and prepare the chocolate topping.

🍫 Photo 3: Create the chocolate topping, pour it over the base, and refrigerate until set (typically around 10 minutes).

🍫 Photo 4: Your delightful dessert is now ready to be cut into 20 pieces and enjoyed!

Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 1 stick (4 oz) butter (softened)
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar (or more to taste)
  • 1/2 cup Dutch process cocoa powder (see notes if you only have regular cocoa powder)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Topping Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp refined coconut oil

Instructions

Base Instructions

  • Combine cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar in a large bowl. Using a hand mixer, whip for 2-3 minutes on high until light and fluffy.
  • Add cocoa powder and vanilla extract and beat again until smooth and well combined. Taste and add more powdered sugar if desired. The mixture will be quite thick. If you need to thin it out slightly to make it more spreadable, mix in 1 tsp water at a time (be careful not to thin it out too much).
  • Line an 8”x8” pan with wax or parchment paper and spread mixture evenly into the pan, making the top as smooth as possible.
  • Freeze for 1 hour, remove from freezer, and immediately make the chocolate topping.

Topping Instructions

  • Add chocolate chips and coconut oil to a large microwave-safe bowl.
  • Microwave at 50% power for 45 seconds. Remove the bowl from the microwave and use a spatula to stir the chocolate thoroughly, allowing it to melt on its own as much as possible.
  • Microwave again for 15 seconds at full power, then repeat the stirring process.
  • If needed, continue microwaving in 10-second increments until the chocolate is completely melted. Be careful not to overheat!

Final Dessert Instructions

  • Remove chocolate base from freezer.
  • Pour topping over the base, as evenly as possible, tilting the pan if necessary.
  • Let it cool in the refrigerator for ten minutes or until the topping is completely solidified.
  • Remove pan from fridge and cut your dessert into 20 pieces. For easier cutting, warm the tip of your knife in hot water.

Notes

Dutch process cocoa powder is strongly recommended for this recipe. However, if you only have regular cocoa powder, use 1/3 to 1/2 cup cocoa powder (to taste). Regular cocoa powder has a more bitter flavor than Dutch process, so start with 1/3 cup and add 1 tbsp at a time until you reach your desired flavor.
