How To Make Chocolate Pie (Quick Overview)
The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the homemade chocolate pie recipe. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.
Start by preparing and baking your pie crust (unless you’ve chosen to use a no-bake pie crust).
Notes About the Crust
With the heat off, place a medium saucepan on the stove and add heavy whipping cream, water, and egg yolks. Whisk until thoroughly combined.
Turn the heat to medium-high. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn it down to a simmer.
Because this recipe uses raw eggs, it’s important that the mixture is heated up to at least 170 F. This temperature should be easily achieved when bringing the mixture to a boil (which happens at 212 F), but feel free to use a food thermometer at this step for peace of mind.

In a small bowl, mix sugar, gelatin, and salt.

Add them to the saucepan and whisk thoroughly until combined.

Melt the chocolate and butter in the microwave, then pour the mixture into the saucepan and whisk until it is completely combined and smooth.
Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the vanilla extract.
Pour the mixture into the baked pie crust…

… and refrigerate for four hours or until set.
To keep skin from forming on the top while refrigerating, cover the top of the pie with plastic wrap directly in contact with the filling.

🥧 To serve: I highly recommend serving this with whipped cream. Shaved chocolate is another great addition too! I personally love to use German’s Sweet Baking Chocolate for the shaved chocolate.

🥧 To store: Store in the fridge for up to three days.
