Why You Will Love This Green Bean Casserole
Ingredients Needed for This Bean Casserole
Ingredient quantities for this easy holiday casserole recipe are located in the recipe card at the end of the post.
- Condensed cream of mushroom soup
- Frozen, fresh, or canned green beans: I prefer frozen green beans because they’re convenient and frozen at peak ripeness.
- Heavy whipping cream (or milk): The classic recipe calls for milk, but I love using heavy whipping cream to make this casserole extra decadent! That said, if you’d like to make it less calorie-dense, switch to milk.
- Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce: The classic recipe calls for soy sauce, but I was out once and used Worcestershire sauce instead, and I found that I preferred the flavor.
- Pepper
- Fried onions: I highly recommend using French’s Original Crispy Fried Onions. Any time I’ve tried using an off-brand, I’m not nearly as happy with them!
- Optional mix-in: If you want to bulk up the casserole and add to the flavor, you can stir in shredded cheddar cheese (preferably freshly shredded for the best texture).
How To Make Green Bean Casserole
The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the recipe. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.
This casserole is ridiculously easy to make, so let’s get started!
In a large bowl, combine soup, heavy whipping cream, soy (or Worcestershire) sauce, and pepper.

Stir in prepared green beans (see recipe notes) and 1 cup of the fried onions. If you’re adding cheddar cheese, add it at this step.
Some green bean casserole recipes split the fried onions evenly between the casserole and the topping. I like more in the casserole than on top of the casserole, but do what you prefer.

Mix…

… and add the mixture to an 8″ x 8″ casserole dish.

Bake for 25-30 minutes until heated through and bubbly. Remove from the oven, stir the mixture, then sprinkle on remaining fried onions.
Return to the oven for 5-10 minutes until the fried onions are golden brown.

Serve and enjoy!
If you find yourself with leftovers the next day, this stuff tastes great reheated!

- 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (or milk)
- 1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1 1/2 cups fried onions (divided)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 F.
- In a large bowl, combine soup, heavy whipping cream, soy (or Worcestershire) sauce, and pepper.
- Stir in steamed green beans and 1 cup fried onions, then place into an 8” x 8” casserole dish.
- Bake until heated through and bubbly (about 25-30 minutes).
- Stir, then sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup fried onions on top and return to the oven for 5-10 minutes until the onions are golden brown.
- Serve, seasoned with additional salt and pepper to taste.
Notes
- If using frozen green beans: microwave them for 1-2 minutes less than the suggested microwave time
- If using fresh green beans: steam them just until they’ve started to soften slightly
- If using canned green beans: drain off the water
- I personally prefer using Worcestershire sauce in this casserole, but soy sauce is the classic ingredient
- Want to add even more flavor? Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese (preferably freshly shredded)
