Why You Will Love Peanut Butter Balls

  • These sweet treats are perfect for the holidays and just because. These are always a huge hit for the holidays, but you’re more than welcome to make them on a random Saturday in March too. (I know I do!)
  • They’re like Buckeyes with a little more chocolate for chocolate lovers. If you haven’t heard of Buckeyes, they’re this recipe but without the peanut butter ball dipped all the way (made to resemble a Buckeye nut). This recipe goes all the way with the chocolate! 🍫
  • They use only a few ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. So let’s get started on these yummy treats!

Ingredients Needed for This Peanut Butter Balls Recipe

Ingredient quantities are located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

  1. Creamy peanut butter
  2. Powdered sugar
  3. Butter
  4. Vanilla extract
  5. Chocolate melting wafers or chocolate chips
  6. Coconut oil

I typically use milk chocolate melting wafers for these, but I’ve also made them with semi-sweet, dark, and white chocolate. Use what you’re in the mood for!

How To Make Peanut Butter Balls (Quick Overview)

The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the homemade chocolate candy recipe. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

In a mixing bowl, combine peanut butter, butter, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar.

Roll into balls of about 2 tsp each and place on cookie sheets.

Because peanut butter consistencies vary a little by brand, sometimes the dough may be a bit too soft to roll. If that happens to your dough, you can mix in more powdered sugar or even graham cracker crumbs (finely crushed if you want them to disappear in the dough).

Place the peanut butter balls in the fridge to firm up. At least two hours is ideal!

Then make the chocolate coating by microwaving the chocolate and coconut oil at 50% powder in 20-second bursts. Make sure you stir thoroughly after each burst to distribute the heat before going for another microwave round.

Chocolate Notes

  • If possible, use melting wafers instead of chips. Chips are designed to hold their shape, so they take longer to melt and don’t melt as smoothly or firm up as nicely as melted wafers.
  • A candy melter is superior to the microwave. If you have one (or are looking for a convenient new kitchen appliance!), a candy melter makes the chocolate step so much easier because it will keep your chocolate liquid once it’s melted, no reheating required.

Using a toothpick, dip each peanut butter ball into the chocolate and place it back on the cookie sheet.

It’s best to work in batches. If you pull all of your peanut butter balls out of the fridge at the beginning, they may be too soft to work with once you get near the end.

Chill in the fridge until the chocolate has firmed up. Marvel at your yummy peanut butter balls! 🥰

To Store: Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to two weeks. If you need to layer them, place a piece of wax paper between each layer. These can also be stored in the freezer for up to three months.

Prep Time 30 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups creamy peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup salted butter (softened)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 cups powdered sugar

For Coating:

  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate melting wafers or chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 tsp refined coconut oil

Instructions

  • Combine peanut butter, butter, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar in a mixing bowl and mix until thoroughly combined.
  • Roll peanut butter mixture into balls using approximately 2 tsp for each ball and place on a cookie sheet. (If you have any trouble with the dough being too soft to form into balls, add 1 tbsp powdered sugar at a time to the dough and re-mix.) Chill until firm (two hours is ideal).
  • Combine chocolate and coconut oil in a microwavable mixing bowl. Microwave at 50% power in 20-second bursts, stirring the mixture after each burst, until fully melted.
  • Using a toothpick, dip the chilled peanut butter balls into the chocolate mixture. Immediately place the dipped ball back onto the cookie sheet and repeat.
  • After dipping all peanut butter balls into the chocolate, refrigerate until the chocolate has firmed up.

Notes

  • If your dough is too soft to roll, mix in more powdered sugar or even graham cracker crumbs (finely crushed if you want them to disappear in the dough).
  • If possible, use melting wafers instead of chocolate chips – they set up easier and have a smoother texture.

This recipe could put Reese out of business! So much better, thought I’d never say that! Came out perfect. I think next I’ll get a silicone mold and make shaped ones instead of balls . Very very yummy!
