  1. Potatoes (Yukon Gold or Idaho – but I highly recommend using Yukon Gold for their buttery flavor and delicate skin that doesn’t need to be peeled)
  2. Butter
  3. Heavy whipping cream
  4. Chicken stock or broth
  5. Sour cream
  6. Shredded cheddar cheese
  7. Poultry seasoning
  8. Onion powder
  9. Garlic powder
  10. Salt
  11. Pepper
  12. Bacon

For the best texture, I highly recommend using freshly shredded cheddar cheese.

How To Make Cheesy Potato Casserole

The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the recipe. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

This casserole is super easy to make, so let’s get started!

First, you will need to dice and boil your potatoes until they are just beginning to soften (about nine minutes for potatoes diced into 1″ pieces).

If you use Yukon Gold potatoes, they don’t need to be peeled. If you use Idaho potatoes, peel them before dicing them.

Once boiled, drain them and place them in a buttered 9″ x 13″ casserole dish.

Make the sauce by combining melted butter, heavy whipping cream, chicken stock or broth, sour cream, 1 cup cheddar cheese, poultry seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and 2 slices of crumbled bacon.

Pour the mixture over the potatoes and stir to coat them evenly.

Sprinkle on the remaining shredded cheddar cheese and bake for 40 minutes.

Remove from oven, sprinkle on remaining crumbled bacon, and bake for an additional 5 minutes.

When the casserole is done baking, let it cool for five minutes and then serve. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold [diced into 1” pieces] or Idaho [peeled and diced into 1” pieces]; Yukon Gold is highly recommended)
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup chicken stock or broth
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese (divided)
  • 1/8 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 6 slices cooked and crumbled bacon (divided)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 F.
  • Dice the potatoes into 1” pieces and boil them until they are just beginning to soften (about 9 minutes).
  • Once boiled, drain and add the pieces to a greased 9” x 13” casserole dish.
  • Add melted butter, heavy whipping cream, chicken stock or broth, sour cream, 1 cup cheddar cheese, poultry seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and 2 slices crumbled bacon to a bowl. Stir to combine.
  • Spoon mixture over potatoes and then stir until potatoes are thoroughly coated.
  • Sprinkle top with remaining 1 cup cheddar cheese and bake at 350 F for 40 minutes. Remove from oven, sprinkle on remaining crumbled bacon, and return to the oven for 5 minutes.
  • Remove from oven, cool for 5 minutes, and serve.

Notes

  • For the best texture, use freshly shredded cheddar cheese.
