This is a classic scalloped potatoes recipe, so it doesn’t include cheese – unlike its cheesy counterpart, au gratin potatoes. (But you’re welcome to add cheese to this dish if you’d prefer!)

How To Make Scalloped Potatoes

The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the recipe. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

This dish is super easy to make, so let’s get started!

Preheat your oven to the temperature listed on the recipe card (at the end of the post).

Grab a greased 9” x 13” baking dish and start layering 1/3 of the potato slices, followed by 1/3 of the onion slices. Sprinkle on some salt and pepper to taste. Repeat the layers until all the potatoes and onions are used up, then set the dish aside.

Yukon Gold potatoes have a thin skin and don’t need to be peeled prior to slicing them. They work beautifully in this dish!

In a skillet over medium-low heat, melt some butter.

Once the butter is melted, stir in the flour. Let it bubble for about 2 minutes while whisking to make sure there are no lumps.

Slowly pour in the milk, whisking as you go…

… until it’s all mixed together and warmed through.

Take the pan off the heat and pour the warm sauce evenly over the potato and onion layers.

Pop the dish in the oven and bake for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the potatoes are nice and tender.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 1/2 yellow onion (thinly sliced)
  • 9 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 6 tbsp butter (diced)
  • salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 F.
  • To a greased 9” x 13” baking dish, add 1/3 of the potato slices followed by 1/3 of the onion slices. Add salt and pepper to taste, then continue the process until you’ve layered all of the potatoes and onions. Set dish aside.
  • To a skillet over medium-low heat, add butter.
  • When the butter is melted, add flour and stir to combine. When the mixture begins to bubble, whisk for 2 minutes, ensuring all clumps are removed.
  • Gradually add the milk, whisking occasionally until combined and warmed throughout.
  • Remove pan from heat and then pour the warm liquid evenly over the potatoes and onions.
  • Place baking dish in the oven and cook until the potatoes are tender, about 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Serve warm and seasoned with additional salt and pepper to taste, if desired.
