How To Make a Casserole Meatball Recipe

The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make meatball recipe. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

  • Preheat oven to temperature on recipe card (bottom of post)
  • In a large bowl, combine Italian sausage, Parmesan cheese, and breadcrumbs. Roll into balls and place into a large non-stick skillet.

  • Cook meatballs on medium heat for approximately 8 minutes until meatballs are browned on all sides.

Note

Your goal is to brown the meatballs; the meatballs will not be fully cooked at this point.

  • Transfer meatballs to an 8” x 8” baking dish.

  • Top meatballs with sauce and cheese.

  • Bake, covered with foil, for 15 minutes. Remove foil and cook for an additional 10 minutes or until cheese is melted and lightly browned.

Note

Use a meat thermometer to ensure the inside of the meatballs has reached at least 160 F. If not, return the dish to the oven until they reach a safe temperature.

  • Serve. Everyone will love this dish!

  • Make sure to test the meatballs with a meat thermometer: A good meat thermometer is a must for any safe kitchen! I don’t know what I would do without mine. Because you’re only browning the meatballs on the stove, you want to use a meat thermometer to ensure they’re fully cooked after baking in the oven.
  • Popular sides: This casserole pairs well with pasta, your favorite toasted bread (including garlic bread), caesar salad, and a variety of vegetable side dishes.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground mild Italian sausage
  • 1/3 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 3 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 24 oz your favorite pasta or marinara sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 F.
  • In a large bowl, combine Italian sausage, Parmesan cheese, and breadcrumbs. Roll into 1 1/2” balls and place into a large non-stick skillet.
  • Cook meatballs on medium heat for approximately 8 minutes until meatballs are browned on all sides (they will not be fully cooked).
  • Transfer meatballs to an 8” x 8” baking dish. Top with sauce and cheese.
  • Bake, covered with foil, for 15 minutes. Remove foil and cook for an additional 10 minutes or until cheese is melted and lightly browned.
  • Using a meat thermometer, ensure inside of meatballs has reached at least 160 F. If not, return to oven.
  • Serve. Everyone will love this dish!
