How To Make Chicken Thighs in the Air Fryer (Quick Overview)
The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the chicken thighs in the air fryer. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.
- Combine all the dry ingredients in a small bowl.
Important Tip
For best results, preheat your air fryer for 5-6 minutes at 400 F before placing the chicken thighs into the air fryer.

This Recipe’s Secret Ingredient 🤫
Baking powder is the secret ingredient that will make these chicken thighs extra crispy! How does it work? The baking powder (NOT soda!) reacts with the oil on the skin to create microscopic air bubbles, which in turn create the oh-so-crispy skin that so many of us love.
And for a little more science: the baking powder raises the pH level of the skin, which also helps the crispiness factor.
- Place chicken thighs onto a clean plate. Pat the thighs dry to remove any moisture and then coat them evenly on both sides with olive oil.
- Evenly sprinkle the seasoning mixture onto both sides of the chicken thighs and rub in to coat.

- Place the chicken thighs into the air fryer basket.

- Cook at 400 F for 10 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, use tongs to carefully flip the thighs over. Then cook for another 6-10 minutes, until the outside of the chicken is crispy and browned.
- Check the internal temperature of the chicken thighs to make sure they have reached at least 165 F.
Note
Some people (myself included!) prefer the taste of chicken thighs heated up to 185-195 F instead of 165 F. Give it a try and see what you think!
- Let rest for 5-10 minutes, then serve and enjoy!

do you put the seasoning on both sides of the thighs?
Hi Debi! Yes, you’ll want to season both sides. I hope you love the recipe!
Baking powder made it crispy, very good. I will make it again.
Thank you so much, Jane! I’m so glad you liked it.
any adjustments for skinless/boneless chicken thighs?
Hi Lynda! I just published that version here: https://fillingandfabulous.com/air-fryer-boneless-chicken-thighs/
recipe has olive oil in ingredients list, however, no mention is made as to when and where to add it
Hi Mark! You can find the olive oil in step 3 of the instructions.
Delicious. The only way to get fried chicken without the mess.
Pretty easy to make and tasty. I had boneless skinless chicken thighs.
Great recipe used boneless skinless thighs will use bone in with skin next time around. Can’t wait to make it again.
I like your recipe I will try very soon
Thanks so much, Joseph! I hope you love it!
Are you putting the skin side down first for 10 mins and then flip over to the skin up for the second 6-10 minutes?
Just wanted to make sure 😉
Hi Brittany! I usually start with the skin side up. I hope you love them!
I used boneless chicken breast and sliced them in half. Instead of reg paprika I used smoked. It gave them a nice kick with the cumen. We dipped them in a small amount of ranch dressing. Served with air fried sweet potatoes and the seasoning from the chicken got on them a lil bit. Had fresh sliced garden tomatoes and cottage cheese. The meal was perfect.
That sounds fantastic, Denise! Thank you for sharing!
BEST chicken ever!! This is my first recipe in the air fryer. We loved it so much we prepared it two nights in a row. I used smoked paprika and half the salt and cumin to my taste. I also used the suggestion to bake to 195 degrees so I cooked it 8 minutes longer. so juicy and crispy. Amazing !!
Thank you so much, Liz! I so appreciate your comment and I’m honored that you made it two nights in a row. Thank you for the five stars! 😊
This is the flavor I have been looking for! I used to love KFC before they started using frakenchickens. This is the PERFECT seasoning for me. This will be my go to seasoning from now on! I encourage other people to at least give it a try. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you so much for your kind words and review, Sandra!! I’m thrilled to hear that you love the flavor and seasoning. Thank you for making my recipe! 😊
Very good. I’ll use this recipe again. I rate this 5 stars but it would only post 4 for some reason.
Thank you so much, Patti! 😊
Will this recipe work if I season the chicken, refrigerate it, and then air fry it the next day?
Hi Wendell! Yes, you can definitely do that. Enjoy!
This recipe nails the flavor that I have been looking for. Fabulous!
These were delicious. The seasoning needs to be tripled for a fuller flavor. I’m generous with the seasoning and the oil. I make a half cup at a time and put it in a sealed container because I use it so much. I used huge chicken thighs so additional time was needed to cook through. Just remember, chicken (or any meat, chicken) continues to cook while it is resting, so if you go by the recommended internal cooking temp, it will be too dry and overcooked. 5 minutes resting is adequate or you’re food won’t be hot enough. This is an excellent recipe.
Holy moly this is the best chicken I’ve ever made. THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this recipe. I want to give it 10 stars!
You are so kind, Bianca! Thank YOU so much for your amazing review!! 😊
This is the best chicken thigh recipe I have ever made! I had 6 thighs so doubled the seasonings & olive oil to coat. They were unbelievably crispy on the outsides and juicy on the inside. Cooked to perfection. Fantastic Dish!😍
Thank you so much, Kate! I’m so glad you loved them! 😊
Can I replace the cumin with something else?
Hi Jen! If you have taco seasoning on hand, you can substitute that 1:1 for the cumin. Or if you have coriander, you can use half the amount (so 1/4 tsp). If you don’t have either of those, you can skip it!
Chicken was nice and crispy and juicy. I doubled the dry ingredients. Worked perfectly.
Thank you so much, Vera! 😊
I made these but I had boneless so I just shortened the time and they turned out great!
Thanks, Vicki! I’m so glad you liked the recipe!

Great recipe. The chicken thighs I used were large. The cooking time recommended was not nearly enough. I probably added 10 or 15 minutes.
