How To Make Taco Salad (Quick Overview)

The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the recipe. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

Start by cooking the ground beef with the taco seasoning.

If you want to go bold with the flavor, use 1 1/2 tbsp instead of 1 tbsp.

Now it’s time to assemble your salads! Gather your ingredients…

… and assemble them into four tasty bowls of Taco Salad. (Or allow people to assemble their own.)

Yes, you can add dressing to your Taco Salad! A personal favorite is mixing sour cream with some salsa, and I know some people do a ranch and salsa combo as well. Cilantro-lime dressing is another good choice.

Serve and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp Homemade Taco Seasoning (or 1 1/2 tbsp for a stronger flavor)
  • 6 cups romaine lettuce or iceberg lettuce (chopped)
  • 1/4 cup diced red onions
  • 1/2 cup canned black beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1/2 cup canned corn (drained and rinsed)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese or taco blend cheese
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup cubed avocado
  • sour cream *optional*
  • tortilla chips *optional*

Instructions

Step 1: Taco Meat Prep

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add crumbled ground beef.
  • Cook the beef thoroughly, then lower the heat. Evenly sprinkle taco seasoning over the beef, mix well, and let it cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  • Remove the skillet from heat and allow the taco meat to cool for at least 5 minutes before assembling the taco salad.

Step 2: Taco Salad Assembly

  • Prepare the salad with all the ingredients, adding the beef last. You can serve the salad with the ingredients separated, as shown in the photos, or mix them to resemble the inside of a taco.

Notes

  • This salad is very customizable. Feel free to add or omit ingredients!
  • If you want to make a dressing, popular options are ranch dressing and salsa mixed together (I also like sour cream and salsa) and cilantro-lime dressing.
