85% lean ground turkey is typically the most common and most affordable option at most grocery stores. For the leanest options, choose 93% lean or even 99% lean.

How To Make Easy Healthy Turkey Chili (Quick Overview)

The steps below are just a quick overview of how to make the healthy turkey chili. The full process in detail is located in the recipe card at the end of the post.

  • To a saute pan on medium-low heat, add olive oil. When olive oil is heated, add carrots and red onion and saute until the onion begins to turn translucent.
  • Add garlic and cook until onions are translucent and the garlic is starting to brown.
  • Add ground turkey and cook until the turkey is cooked through.
  • Add chili seasoning and chopped bell pepper. Stir to thoroughly incorporate the chili seasoning into the mixture.
  • Add kidney beans, black beans, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and chicken stock, and again thoroughly stir the mixture. Bring it to a low boil.
  • Then, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Simmer the chili, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until the chili reaches your desired thickness.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium red onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (diced)
  • 1 medium red bell pepper (chopped)
  • 1 large carrot (diced)
  • 2 lbs ground turkey
  • 14 oz can kidney beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 14 oz can black beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 serving Homemade Chili Seasoning Mix (see notes)
  • 28 oz can diced tomatoes
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken stock

Instructions

  • To a saute pan on medium-low heat, add olive oil. When olive oil is heated, add carrots and red onion and saute until the onion begins to turn translucent. Add garlic and cook until onions are translucent and the garlic is starting to brown.
  • Add ground turkey. Stir mixture and turn heat up to medium. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the turkey is cooked through.
  • Add chili seasoning and chopped bell pepper. Stir to thoroughly incorporate the chili seasoning into the mixture.
  • Add kidney beans, black beans, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and chicken stock, and again thoroughly stir the mixture. Bring it to a low boil.
  • Then, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Simmer the chili, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until the chili reaches your desired thickness.
  • Serve as-is or with chili toppings such as sour cream, shredded cheese, and tortilla chips.

Notes

Make sure to use my Homemade Chili Seasoning recipe for this chili. You will use 1 serving of the seasoning (which is half of the recipe). If you don’t like your chili spicy, reduce or omit the cayenne pepper.
